Chapter Seven

When we were done eating, I helped Danny clear away the table despite his best efforts to get me to go and rest, even though I was so tired I was tempted to do just that. I stood at the sink washing dishes, doing my best impression of a modern, domesticated man. As I watched Danny dry and put them away, I realised how incredibly familial we looked together and I liked that. I liked it a lot. I felt right at home in his kitchen. I tried not to let my enthusiasm for such a mundane chore show on my face because Danny would be sure to give me shit about it, but I failed miserably. I should have remembered that nothing gets past him.

“What are you looking so pleased about?” he asked, just as we were finishing up.

I wrung out the dish rag and placed it over the faucet to dry. “What? I’m not allowed to be happy?”

His brow creased. “Have you been body snatched?”

I rolled my eyes. “You’re a real comedian, you know that?”

“If you’re not too tired, we need to talk about the case.”

I nodded, relieved by the change of subject. It was early days in our relationship and as crazy as it sounded, I didn’t want to feel too happy because I was terrified I’d wake up and realise it had had all been a dream. “We can do that.”

During the two days I’d been in hospital, when Danny hadn’t been visiting me, he’d been working tirelessly with Leigh and Connolly to find Ramon, but so far they didn’t have any leads. Ramon had finally gone underground, it seemed. Our only hope of finding him was through a snitch, but we’d exhausted all our usual resources. No one knew anything and if they did, they weren’t talking about it.

I’d been amazed when the agents came by the hospital to see me. Nearly becoming chopped liver had softened Leigh’s opinion of me somewhat. I wouldn’t go as far as to call her behaviour towards me friendly, or even pleasant, but she hadn’t been nearly as caustic.

Danny and I carried our wine glasses through to the living room and sat next to each other on the sofa.

“I learnt something earlier I think you’ll be interested in hearing,” he said, running his finger along the rim of his wine glass, his lips pursed.

I sank back into the cushions with an over-exaggerated sigh and took a sip of the rich merlot. “What?”

“It’s about the priest and the rabbi.”

Wine forgotten, I put the glass down and leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees. I ignored the twinge of pain in my ribs and asked, “Did Connolly and Leigh finally tell you what they know?”

“Yeah and it’s some heavy shit, Lucas. It’s bigger and far more serious than we imagined.”

I scowled at him. “Why didn’t you tell me about this earlier?”

“Because I wanted to see you actually finish a meal for once.”

I huffed out a frustrated breath. “Great, I ate.
